A disabled Sterling Heights resident got a little help from the city's police and fire departments last week when he found himself stranded on Lakeside Circle with a non-functioning electric wheelchair.
Sterling Heights police and fire departments were dispatched to the area near Eastbrook Drive on Sept. 2 at 9:45 p.m. Dispatch advised officers that a disabled citizen, who was unable to walk, was stranded in his wheelchair on the side of the road and unable to get home.
Upon seeing that the battery in the resident's wheelchair had died, police decided to push the resident to his home in a nearby assisted living facility, which was located about a quarter mile away from where the wheelchair had stopped working. They were able to get the resident home safely and without incident.
"Every day the job of a Sterling Heights police officer and firefighter brings new challenges," said Sterling Heights police Lt. Mario Bastianelli. "Both departments strive to provide the best services to our citizens, especially when it matters the most."
